SD4000 IS Overview

Canon’s recently introduced PowerShot SD4000 IS becomes the latest compact digital (and first Canon ELPH) to employ back-illuminated CMOS sensor technology that promises enhanced imaging performance in the form of increased sensitivity and low noise. Long-time Canon watchers may have wondered why a company that has traditionally almost always increased resolution in their latest cameras would choose 10 megapixels for an ELPH that moves right to the front of the mid-range Canon lineup, at least from a price standpoint.

To advance heighten this models low-light capabilities, Canon equipped the SD4000 IS with a fast f/2.0 3.8x optical zoom lens, which also features their proven optical image stabilization system. The Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS also boasts a very fast burst rate, at 8.4 frames per second, along with high-def and slow-motion video recording.

The Canon SD4000 IS is very similar in arrangement to Canon’s other higher-end Digital ELPHs. The PowerShot SD4000 IS is slightly thick, but still highly pocketable and is cozy to hold and use. There’s a large 3-inch wide-screen LCD on back. It does get adequately glimmery, though, for use in full sun.

One of the reasons to get PowerShot SD4000 IS  is its 28mm-equivalent wide-angle lens with a maximum aperture of f2.0. For a lot of photographers these specs are more important than the zoom range, which is by today’s standards a relatively short 3.8x. The compounding is outstanding for portraits and landscapes in gain to its ability to let more light in so there’s less need to use slower shutter speeds and higher ISOs for low-light shooting.

Pop art is short for popular art. It is a branch of art dealing with images of celebrities, cartoon characters, and much from advertising. The popular artists strived to destroy the line between what is considered as high or fine arts, and low art. Lichtenstein pop art is an example of the blending of these two different arts, and a successful one at that.

Whereas Andy Warhol was inspired mostly by Hollywood, cartoons, and advertising, Roy Fox Lichtenstein looked towards advertising and comics for his art. He was also born in the center of the arts, New York City, to a family that was well-off. He eventually left New York to study and teach, but later on came back, and this was the start of his worldwide fame. He first experimented with abstract expressionism, but later on turned to pop art. Like Warhol, he used bold, brash colours which made his paintings look very attractive. He also made pop art reproductions of the works of classical painters.

His works had been by natural means designed in comics, but Lichtenstein tried to differentiate his art from comics art. He was known to comment openly about his own works of art. Many doubted the veracity of his work, but Lichtenstein continued creating his comic-like art. In the course of the late 1980’s, he sold a artwork for at least five million dollars, establishing a record. Lichtenstein worked relentlessly to manufacture his own brand of art, and this paid off. Lichtenstein was often referred to as the King of Pop Art Portraits, and he wanted people to stop referring to comics as lowbrow art. For him, interested in something as ‘low’ was a method of thinking, in preference to the level of the art on its own. People became familiar with Lichtenstein pop art because he always used Benday dots, thick borders, and wild colours in his works.

Resembling Warhol, Lichtenstein pop art carries on to be witnessed today in various kinds of sites, and printed on different items; his brazen art has made a mark in the world, and the people carry on to patronize his artwork. He not only painted, he also sculpted and made prints for lithographs, etchings, and others. His works are definitely unique, and this is what helped usher Lichtenstein into fame and fortune. During the seventies, his works started turning into surrealism, and his works showed this new style.

Indeed, Lichtenstein pop art is still relevant today, as he continues to inspire other writers. Thanks to him, popular art has become more and more famous, and many will continue his legacy. The Panasonic DMC-LX3 is a handsome yet understated camera, available in a choice of shiny silver or more serious black. It’s a fairly compact camera, although it is wide (over 10cms) and more importantly quite deep too. The specifications claims that the LX3 is 27.1mm deep, but this doesn’t take the lens into account. The true depth is actually 45mm, which means that whilst the LX3 is still pocketable, it’s a tighter squeeze than the official figures suggest, and therefore more at home in a small camera bag than in a pocket. The LX3 is very well-built, with a high quality all-metal body and cont.

The overall design is dominated by the lens on the front and the large 3 inch LCD screen on the back. The built-in flash is particularly neat. It pops up out of the top of the body when you open it, and then is stored safely away by pushing it back down. Panasonic have also added a flash hotshoe, which as you’d expect accepts either an optional flashgun, or more unusually the External Optical Viewfinder (more on this later). Another neat feature is the joystick, which allows you to set apertures and shutter speeds, control manual focusing and access the Quick Menu. It’s quite an innovative idea that speeds up using the camera, which Panasonic now feature on a number of other models. Slight minuses in terms of build quality include the cover for the battery compartment and SD card slot, which feels a little insubstantial and is locked using a cheap plastic switch, and the tripod socket is positioned in the bottom-left corner of the camera, which doesn’t make it very stable on a tripod.

Speaking of image quality, Panasonic have made some incredibly bold claims about the LX3, which unfortunately are a little off the mark. We found that the new 10 megapixel sensor does deliver better image quality than all other current Panasonic compacts (and much better than the LX2), but marginally so, despite the physically bigger sensor and pixels. Once again noise is the main problem. I’d be happy to use ISO 100-400 for a lot of photos, with ISO 800 reserved for low-light situations. ISO 100-400 isn’t a particularly versatile range, but the usual excellent optical image stabilisation system means that the Panasonic LX3 Digital Camera is still an adaptable camera, as you can take a photo at a faster ISO speed and therefore a slower shutter speed, and still get sharp results, without adversely affecting the battery life too much. The fastest speeds of 1600 and 3200 are only worth using for very small prints. Another issue that I noticed was over-saturation of reds and oranges, with mid-orange flowers in one picture taking on an almost red appearance, when using the Standard film mode setting in both JPEG and RAW mode. In all other aspects, the LX3 certainly delivers on its big promise, with virtually no signs of chromatic aberrations, accurate white balance (you can even set the exact colour temperature in Kelvin), superb macro and low-light capabilities, and an effective pop-up flash.

Panasonic have focused on making the DMC-LX3 appeal to as wide an audience as possible, with an enhanced Intelligent Auto mode that achieves brilliant results in most situations with very little input required from the user. This is backed up by the usual extensive range of scene modes and handling that won’t scare the inexperienced user away. One of the successes of the LX3 is that it will suit both the avid snapper and the more cautious members of your family. HD video is not much of a success. While it sounds brilliant on paper and fits in well with Panasonic’s vision of an HD-enabled home, the DMC-LX3 is no match for an entry-level dedicated video camcorder, and also suffers from muffled sound-quality and huge file sizes that quickly fill your memory card. 720p HD video in a pocketable camera is still a nice-to-have feature, but don’t buy the DMC-LX3 solely because of this feature alone, especially as you’ll have to buy the optional component cable to link up the LX3 to your high-def TV.

To make sure you answer these questions correctly you need to know how important the painting or the photo is. If it is of great importance, like a graduation event, then you will want to go for something that is larger. You only need a small frame if the event wasn’t particularly important. If you are framing a painting then you will have the size of the frame dictated to you.

Once you have established its importance start thinking about where the frame is going to go. If I want something the be in the front room of my house then I want it very visible. If you want it next to your bed then go for a smaller frame. You won’t get many A3 frames next to your bed!

You can use one of those digital frames if you are getting a photo framed. I like to use a mixture of the ‘old fashioned’ frames and the new digital ones. They are simple to use as you can just transfer the memory card from your camera.

I like making my digital frame do a slide show so that I can always see it in the front room. Sometimes I get distracted from the television and just watch my photos going around!

The problems with digital frames are that they do use electricity which can be costly, you can’t put paintings in them and you can’t have them large to fit A2 or A3 frames.

I don’t mind which frame you go for as long as you show off your pictures. In this day and age a lot of people just leave them on their computers and I think is a waste.
